Welcome

Welcome to the Matchedash Community Heritage Centre or the "Old School". The brick building was erected in 1915 to replace the original union school (Matchedash & Tay townships) after it was destroyed by fire. Many of us have fond memories of games such as kick the can, sliding down to rock and getting soakers as we fished for tadpoles in the creek. In 1967 the school was closed due to County By-law regarding enrolment.

After it was closed as a school, the building served as a Municipal office, Library and Community Centre for the Township of Matchedash. In 1993 County restructuring created the Township of Severn and this building was sold for $1.00 to the Matchedash Community Heritage Centre. (Incorporated April 5, 1997)

At the time of restructuring, money from the former Matchedash Township Council and the Library Board went to Severn Township. Our Corporation has received a total of $122,568.18 from Severn Township.Countless hours from volunteers have kept our dream of a community meeting place alive.

Today in 2008 the MCHC directors are attempting to rekindle the close community spirit once inherent in the old school. Fundraisers like card parties and craft sales help support rising costs. The North River Womens' Institute continues to be the glue of our small community. A heritage tree will honour previous residents who helped mould our area. A small library with internet access welcomes young and old and historical artifacts are proudly displayed. Directors are attempting to provide educational and social programs for a range of interests and talents. Our hall often continues to play an important role in special occasions and family celebrations.

This site has been created to make our hall more accessible and active in residence daily life. Send us an email with your comments and suggestions and get involved. It's great for the spirit!
